Bioplastic, Biodegradable, Compostable, or Recycled Plastic?

Which is right for you? That depends on several factors. Feel free to contact us for help choosing the right plastic and designing your packaging.

Does your packaging need to be printed?

Print quality is the highest on bioplasticbiodegradable plastic*,and compostable plastic. However, for compostable, there is a limit to which colors can be used and how much of the item can be covered to ensure it's still certified compostable.

If the printing needed is a simple suffocation warning or verbiage about the bags eco-friendliness, then recycled plastic is an option as well, but print quality is not as sharp due to irregularities on the film's surface.

Our eco-manufactured plastic products can be printed but with just one color and repeated randomly.

Does your bag need a ziplock?

We offer zipper tops on all our plastic types except biodegradable* (though we do stock seven sizes of biodegradable* ziplock bags)

Do you want to minimize the amount of new petroleum-based polyethylene needed?

Our bioplastic contains the least and is comprised of only 50% virgin poly, while our recycled is 40 to 75%, compostable is 77%, and both biodegradable* and eco-manufactured are 100%.

Do you want your packaging to be made from sustainable and renewable resources?

Our bioplastic is made of 50% bio-based material, and our compostable is 23%.

Do you want your packaging to be degradable?

Our custom biodegradable* products are made to break down in landfills, while our compostable ones break down in commercial composting facilities as per ASTM 6400 and in home composting systems.

Do you want your packaging to be recyclable?

Except for compostable, all of our eco-friendly options are recyclable.

Where will your packaging eventually end up?

Compostable is the best option if you have control over how your packaging is disposed of. However, if it may wind up in a landfill (ex. a consumer product), it's not worth paying a premium for. Worse yet, if it is accidentally recycled, it could negatively impact the recycling process. For plastic waste that will be recycled or is destined for a landfill, biodegradable is the best choice followed by bioplastic, recycled, and eco-manufactured.
